Muslims demand appointment of registrar of marriage in Keonjhar

Keonjhar: Members of an outfit here have demanded to appoint a registrar of marriage or Qazis to grant legal sanction to all marriages and divorces taking place in the community.

The matter came to fore when a delegation of All Odisha Mohammedan Marriage and Divorce Registrar Association met the additional district magistrate Bhakta Charan Pradhan and submitted a memorandum to him addressed to the collector Monday.

The members led by their treasurer Md. Arshadul Quadri claimed they are making this demand as they are facing a lot of hardship as there are not enough Qazis available in the district to perform the marriages of Sunni Muslims living in various places of the district.

The members demanded to appoint an educated and talented person as the registrar of marriage or Qazi who will help the couple wishing to marry in solemnizing their marriage as well grant them divorce when they decide to terminate their marriage.

The appointment of a registrar will help in according legal sanction to all marriage and divorces taking place in their society, Quadri said. He said that the administration could select a Qazi of its choice or appoint senior persons of their society like Sk Samil a Moulavi in the Sunni Jamma mosque in the old town, Mahir, Alim and Fazil to the post who have  done their higher education in Islamic studies. This has been mentioned in their memorandum.
