Bhubaneswar: The fifth Nayika Odissi Dance Festival, organised by Angaraga, celebrated the essence of Nayika Bhava—the eternal feminine spirit—through a series of classical performances at Jayadev Bhawan, bringing together leading artistes, cultural figures and dance enthusiasts.
The highlight of the evening was the conferment of the Nayika Samman on Padma Shri GuruGeeta Mahalik for her lifelong contribution to the promotion and global recognition of Odissi. Guru Satyaban Paschimakabata was also honoured with the Nayika Kala Sadhaka Samman for his distinguished service to art and culture.
Eminent personalities, including Guru Dr Snehaprabha Samantray, Dr Indira Dutta, Meetarani Biswal, Prof. Tara Prasanna Satpathy and actress Lumraina Satpathy, attended the event and lauded the initiative for promoting classical dance and nurturing emerging talent.
Speaking on the occasion, Guru Snehaprabha Samantray described Odissi as “a lived philosophy” and said the festival plays a crucial role in sustaining tradition while encouraging continuity.
The festival featured a curated repertoire of performances reflecting devotion, love and feminine energy. It opened with a Mangalacharan by Angaraga Odissi Dance Institution. Soloist Abhipsa Pati presented “Dekhiba Para Asare,” depicting Krishna’s divine love through expressive abhinaya and rhythmic precision.
A group performance by Padamrita Dance Academy explored Parashakti, while a duet by Shraddhaswini Priyadarshini and Chandraprabha Dalai highlighted the nuances of Nayika Bhava. Jagruti Cultural Academy presented “Jagajjanani,” portraying maternal divinity, followed by a vibrant Sambalpuri folk dance, “SargiPhula,” which concluded the evening on an energetic note.
Each performance blended nritta, abhinaya and natya, offering audiences a rich cultural experience.
Conceptualised under Guru Snehaprabha Samantray and organised by Guru Smruti Puspa Panda, the festival underscored Angaraga’s commitment to preserving and promoting classical dance. The event was anchored by Biswajit Baliarsingh, with communication and branding managed by Kiran Kavya.
The festival continues to establish itself as a significant cultural fixture in Odisha’s artistic calendar.
