Cuttack: The Commissionerate police, which had a sigh of relief after the arrest of gangster brothers—Sushil Dhalasamanta and Sushanta Dhalasamanta, has now found itself in a tight spot with emergence of new criminals gangs in the Silver City.
A few new criminal gangs have emerged in the Silver city and its outskirts in the past six months pushing the crime graph to a new high. Gangs formed by Kalyolo, Enduo and Rinku have become a headache for the police. Members of these gangs reportedly have lifted 50 trucks in the past couple of months.
Sources said members of the gangs were dismantling stolen trucks in a warehouse at Balasore before selling the engines and wheels to a scrap trader in West Bengal.
Incidents of bomb hurling and firing have also become a day-to-day affair in the city. According to sources, the city witnessed five incidents of bomb hurling and three firing incidents in the past two months. Although police have prepared a database to keep a tab on the criminals, the initiative failed to yield any result.
Moreover, police have failed arrest the members of Shakeel gang. The gang is reportedly involved in a series of criminal activities. The gang hurled bombs at the house of a Kesherpur resident March 24 and fired at a cellphone trader at Cantonment Road March 27.
Besides, members of some new criminal gangs have carried out several bomb attacks in the city. A few of them allegedly hurled bombs at the residence of an MLA’s kin. They also fired at a trader at College Square.
Locals, meanwhile, blamed police inaction against criminals for the rise of new gangs in the city.
“Officials of all police stations used to visit the jails and collect details regarding arrested criminals. It had helped police to keep tab on the criminals after their release from the jails. However, the practice has been abandoned now. So, police are clueless about the criminals,” said a retired police officer.
A few years ago, the Commissionerate police had prepared a database to keep a record of the criminals of all the 20 police stations under it. The database comprised photographs and addresses and offences details of the criminals. The CP has prepared database of 5,000 criminals so far, DCP Sanjeev Arora said.
