Cuttack: In an effort to tackle campus violence, the Ravenshaw University authorities Thursday brought drastic changes to the procedure for student union elections.
Authorities have decided to scrap the system of a single students’ union for the whole university. They have opted for formation of separate students’ councils for nine schools of the varsity. “Earlier, there was a single students’ union comprising president, vice-president, general secretary and other officer bearers to look after pupils’ issues. Now, all the nine schools of the university will have separate students’ councils,” said Vice-Chancellor Prakash Chandra Sarangi. According to Sarangi, the varsity authorities will hold separate elections for formation of students’ councils for School of Life Science, School of Physical Science, School of Mathematical Science, School of Information and Computer Science, School of Commerce, School of Management Studies, School of Language, School of Social Science and School of Regional Studies and Earth Science. Varsity sources said each school has two or more departments. As per the new norms, students of each batch in a particular department, including both undergraduate and postgraduate, will elect one representative. The elected representatives from all departments in a particular school will choose one of them as convener and another as assistant convener for the council. Moreover, the elected representatives will have the freedom to nominate their other office-bearers for the council.
“We hope that the new system for students’ union election will ensure peace and study atmosphere in the campus. The new norms have been finalised as per the recommendations of JM Lyngdoh panel,” Sarangi said.
