Jajpur: There was resentment among locals after a newborn baby was found dumped in a garbage bin near the Madhuban Community Health Centre (CHC) under Rasulpur block in Jajpur district, Wednesday. The baby was first spotted by a sweeper who alerted the authorities and subsequently the police were informed.
The sweeper who had come to dump waste material inside the bin was shocked to see the baby inside the bin. He immediately alerted the health centre officials. Doctors then rushed to the spot and rescued the baby in a critical condition. After primary treatment, the doctors shifted the newborn to Jajpur district headquarters hospital (DHH) as its condition deteriorated. Later in the day the newborn was taken to Sishu Bhawan in Cuttack for proper care.
Police officials reached the spot and started investigation into the matter. They recorded the statements of the sweeper and other officials. District child protection officer (DCPO) Niranjan Kar also reached Jajpur DHH to find out the status of the newborn.
Locals however, were agitated as this was not the first case where a newborn had been abandoned. They demanded implementation of strict rules by the health centre management so that such incidents did not happen in future.
