Jajpur Road: A newborn was abandoned at the Jajpur Road community health centre (CHC) by her parents who fled after learning that it was a girl Saturday.
The matter came to the fore after the baby was found crying in a corner of a room in the CHC. A nurse spotted the baby and tried to find its parents, but in vain. Later, the matter was brought to the notice of the medical authorities who alerted the police.
Police registered a case and launched a probe. Preliminary investigation revealed that a woman named Ambika was admitted to the CHC where she gave birth to a baby girl.
On learning that the baby was a girl, the woman along with her husband fled the hospital leaving behind the newborn. Medical authorities said the baby had an injury on its spine and the couple abandoned it fearing that it was handicapped.
Even as the reports of a baby girl buried in a compost pit by her own father is yet to erase from public memory, the repeat of another such incident sparked outrage among locals who demanded action against the parents.
District child protection officer Mihir Kumar Jena reached the hospital and took stock of the situation. PNN
