Bhubaneswar, Feb 21: The 46th convocation ceremony of the Utkal University has seen an array of awards and honours given to the meritorious students, who were called the vanguards of the future of India by the chief guest and chief justice of Orissa High Court.
“You are the vanguards of the future, who are capable of shaping the development of our country and are indispensable for a better nation building process. You will go on to join different professions and each of those would be rewarding in their own ways,” said Amitava Roy, chief justice of Orissa HC.
Roy also congratulated the families and friends of the students. “It is because of your consistent support and cooperation that they have achieved this great honour. I also congratulate others who contributed to raise the level of competition by their participation,” said the chief
justice.
Ph.D degrees were awarded to 263 students, while gold medals were given to 107 students here Saturday. Six prominent personalities – freedom fighter Prafula Das, singer Chittaranjan Jena, music director Prafula Kar, business tycoon Subrat Bagchi, scientists Sitakanta Das and Jogesh Chandra Pati have been conferred the prestigious Honoris Causa. “The university today has conferred eminent persons with Honoris Causa by recognising their accomplishments. They possess an inquisitive mind, dedication to task and commitment to an ideal. I congratulate them,” said SC Jamir Governor and chancellor of the university.
The chancellor also said that it is high time to concentrate on making world class universities. “Not finding any Indian universities among top 200 in the global rankings for the universities is alarming. It is perhaps an overdue reform or innovation that awaits our attention and action to take the right path. I am sure Utkal University which has a distinct tradition will do the needful at the earliest,” said Jamir.
The vice chancellor Asok Das spoke about the progress made by the varsity in the past few years. The function was attended by director higher education Nihar Ranjan Patnaik, registrar SK Das, all the staff members of the university and the students among others.
