Puri, June 11: Government Railway Police Thursday claimed to have arrested a notorious train robber identified as Sashikant Pradhan from Satyabadi. Gold ornaments weighing 80 gm were reportedly seized from the accused.
Pradhan (29) hailed from Gualiapari under Satyabadi police limits, GRP outpost officer in-charge Ramesh Chandra Das said.
An expensive mobile phone and a laptop were also recovered from his possession, Das said.
“The accused along with his accomplice had looted gold ornaments from a Rourkela Steel Plant employee’s family on the Haridwar-Puri express. The victim Mahendra Pratap Patra and his family were sleeping when the incident occurred,” Das said.
Patra was going to Puri after attending a wedding in Balasore, according to sources.
“The accused was using the mobile phone that he had burgled on the train. We located him by tracking the mobile phone,” Das added.
The robbers had taken loan from a finance company after depositing some of the stolen jewellery, Das said.
Another robber identified as Bain Mohapatra is operating a gang which targets passengers between Bhadrak and Puri stations. Mohapatra was arrested earlier in a robbery case and was subsequently released on bail, and is continuing with the racket, according to sources.
