Baragada: Police seized counterfeit notes of Rs 45,000 face value and detained a minor while he was allegedly trying to purchase a secondhand scooter in Baragada town, police said.
The minor is reportedly from Sundaragada district. Baragada Town police registered a case following the seizure of fake currency notes, which included denominations of Rs 100, Rs 200 and Rs 500. After being detained, the minor was produced before a local court Tuesday, police said.
According to police, Swagat Sahu, a resident of Bank Colony behind Mini Stadium in Ward 13 under Baragada Municipality, had planned to sell his scooter bearing registration number OD-17-Z-0892. He had posted an advertisement on OLX, an online marketplace, regarding the sale.
The minor contacted Sahu on his mobile phone and expressed interest in purchasing the scooter. Following their communication, the minor reached Sahu’s residence Monday and the deal was finalised for Rs 45,000.
However, Sahu suspected that the currency notes handed over by the minor in exchange for the scooter were counterfeit. He took the notes to a local State Bank of India branch for verifi cation. After the bank confi rmed that the notes were fake, Sahu lodged a complaint at Baragada Town police station. Police subsequently took the minor into custody and brought him to the Town police station for questioning. Further investigation is underway.
