Bhubaneswar: Odisha government is planning to identify structurally unsafe government and private buildings across the state and take steps to demolish those posing a threat to public safety, Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra said Monday.
The move follows the recent building collapse in Delhi and is aimed at preventing similar incidents in Odisha, Mahapatra said. The department will issue a formal letter to begin the process of identifying and acting against vulnerable structures. he added.
The minister said authorities have already started identifying unsafe school buildings and Anganwadi centres across the state. Letters have been issued for the demolition of structures found to be dangerous or structurally weak. The exercise is intended to safeguard students, children, government employees and the general public. Authorities will assess vulnerable buildings and take necessary action, including demolition where required.
Delhi building collapse
The move comes against the backdrop of the Satya Niketan building collapse in south Delhi. Rescue operations at the site concluded Monday after multiple agencies worked through the night to evacuate people trapped under the debris.
Delhi Police said five people were rescued and taken to nearby hospitals, while the death toll in the incident rose to seven.
