Baripada: The authorities of Similipal Tiger Reserve in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district are contemplating removing the radio collar fitted on a tigress after the big cat was found to have settled in the national park, an official said Saturday.
Tigress Zeenat, translocated from Maharashtra’s Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve to Odisha in November 2024, has a record of escaping from the Simlipal National Park and roaming across forests in Odisha, West Bengal, and Jharkhand.
“The tigress was last captured from West Bengal’s Bankura district in December 2024 and subsequently was released in Similipal. The animal gave birth to four cubs and was found well-settled in Similipal,” STR field director Prakash Chand Gogineni told reporters.
“Zeenat has successfully established her territory in Similipal forest. We are now contemplating removing the radio collar fitted on the big cat’s neck after monsoon,” he said.
The Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR) field director said the radio collar can be removed remotely.
Another tigress Jamuna, which was also brought from the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in October 2024, is also carrying a radio collar fitted on its neck, the official said.
The animal’s movement is being constantly monitored, he added.
