Sonepur: A video has gone viral on various social media platforms showing locals in Odisha’s Subarnapur district chasing and beating up a police Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI).
The incident took place at Tileimal village in Subarnapur district. The ASI was identified as Gourahari Meher who was posted at Subalaya Police Station, a source said Wednesday.
According to the source, locals roughed up the ASI for allegedly misbehaving with the wife of a complainant.
Subhas Pradhan and his brother Ratnakar Pradhan went to Subalaya Police Station following an altercation between the two over felling of a tree, the source informed.
While the police allegedly paid heed to Subhas, Ratnakar’s plight was neglected, a local source said.
Following Subhas lodged an FIR against Ratnakar, ASI Meher reached the village in plain clothes for an investigation and allegedly misbehaved with Ratnakar’s wife. The villagers were enraged by the act and roughed up Meher, the local added.
Ratnakar alleged that “A quarrel started between me and my brother Subhas over chopping off of a tree. Later an FIR was registered against me by Subhas. But when I went to file an FIR, the police did not accept it. When I was absent, the ASI misbehaved with my wife.”
On the other hand, the police have shared a different version of it.
“When ASI Meher went to the village for investigation, Ratnakar’s wife started a verbal duel with him. Afterwards, some villagers attacked him. A case has been registered in this regard and we will take all the necessary steps,” said SDPO Dolamani Bhoi.
As many as seven villagers who were allegedly involved in attacking the ASI have been booked.
