Bhubaneswar: Tamando police have arrested a 30-year-old man for allegedly cheating a city resident of Rs 9 lakh on the promise of securing him a permanent job at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, officials said Saturday.
The accused has been identified as Bhagirathi Sethi, a resident of Pathapur in Kataka district who was staying at Bhagabanpur in the Patrapada area. According to police, complainant Manoranjan Bhoi, a resident of Bhagabanpur, alleged that Sethi had promised to arrange a permanent job for him as a sanitary attendant at AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
Believing the assurance, Bhoi allegedly paid the accused a total of Rs 9 lakh August 8, 2024, at his residence in Patrapada. Of the amount, Rs 4.36 lakh was transferred through UPI, while the remaining Rs 4.64 lakh was paid in cash, police said.
However, despite nearly two years having passed, the accused allegedly neither arranged the promised job nor returned the money. When Bhoi later demanded either the job or a refund, Sethi abused him and threatened him.
He also allegedly refused to return the money, following which Bhoi lodged a written complaint with Tamando police. Based on the complaint, police registered a case and launched an investigation. Sethi was subsequently arrested and forwarded to court. Further investigation into the case is underway, said police.
