Bhubaneswar, June 10: Laxmisagar police Wednesday arrested one more person for the attack on a police team in Haldipadia basti June 8.
Binati Patra, 45, was arrested from Santipalli basti while she was trying to go to the city railway station to board a train.
With this, three persons have been arrested for attacking a police team from Laximsagar police station. Police had Tuesday arrested Jitendra Karada and Mamta Nayak who were sent to Jharpada jail after their bail pleas were rejected.
However, the alleged mastermind of the incident, Saila Ranasingh, against whom eight cases are pending at Laxmisagar police station, is still at large.
Laxmisagar police said Ranasingh took advantage of a dispute that had arisen between two families and provoked the slum dwellers to attack the police personnel.
Police sources said the attack on the officers had little to do with police personnel going to rescue a man, Santosh Jena, who had been tied to a garbage bin by the slum dwellers for having an affair with a girl of the area.
Two months ago Saila’s son Tutu had misbehaved with a relative of Jena, police said. Later, Jena had attacked Tutu. When Jena found himself under attack for having a relationship with a slum girl, Ranasingh allegedly used the occasion to settle scores with Jena and also vent his anger on the police personnel.
Cases against 25 slum dwellers were booked by Laxmisagar police. Of these, 22 are still absconding.
