Cuttack, Feb 10: Orissa suffered a humiliating 10 wickets loss against Bengal in a match of the Women’s U-23 Zonal League ODI cricket tournament at the Ravenshaw University Ground here Tuesday.
Opting to bat first, Orissa mustered 149 for the loss of seven wickets in the stipulated 50 overs. Barring Pragyan Mohanty (43, 69b, 6×4) and Ritu Singh (38, 42b, 5×4) no other batswomen could offer resistance.
Chasing a victory target of 150, Bengal had no trouble as they overhauled the total in 33.3 overs without losing any wickets. Priyanka Bala (72, 99b, 10×4, 1×6) and Ambika Guha (58, 105b, 8×4) batted brilliantly to ensure an emphatic victory.
In another match at the Nimpur Ground, Tripura defeated Assam by 52 runs.
Karatekas leaves
A 16-member state team left from the city Tuesday to take part in the National Senior Karate Championship at Cochin, starting February 14.
The squad: Valena Valentina, Abhishek Patnaik, Sindhu Tanaya Khuntia, Anupama Swain, Chinmayee Bhuyan, Anuradha Patra, Krushna Chandra Moharana, Dilip Kumar Jena, Rajani Bishi, Bikash Digal, Toofan Badatya, Sagar Palo, Krishna Shikari, Sujata Sahoo, Shusumuni, Paltasingh and Itishree Nayak.
Squads selected
A 16-member squad each for the East Zone U-23 and senior women’s cricket tournament was selected in Cuttack, Tuesday. Eight players from Orissa have found places in the two squads.
Sushree Pradhan has been appointed as the vice-captain of the U-23 team and is a member of both squads. Madhumita Behera of the state has been selected as the skipper of the senior team.
The other members of the U-23 team are Pragyan Mohanty, Sujata Mallick and Sunita Murmu. Similarly Swagatika Rath, Madhuri Meheta and Kadambini Mahakud have been included in the senior team.
