BHUBANESWAR: Paper quilling is a variety of craftwork that involves rolling of paper into fine long ribbons around a needle in a spiral shape. It is then combined elaborately to create works of art.

The art form dates back to 15th century AD. It is said to have originated with decorative frames created by European nuns for religious paintings by using material leftover from binding Bibles and rolling it around bird feathers.

The craft has a long history that attracts many art enthusiasts, particularly in Western countries. Nowadays, it is gaining ground rapidly in India in general and the city of Bhubaneswar in particular. Simple techniques combined with intricate designs that resemble embroidery make it the cynosure of all eyes. Orissa Post interacted with few master quillers of the city to delve deeper into the subject.

Minakshi Garabadu, a professional quill artist and resident of Rangamatia, said, “The art of paper quilling has innumerable design options. From creative jewellery to birthday cards, kitchen equipments to fully fledged flower trees and Easter eggs, one can craft almost any piece of home decor with this medieval art form.”

“Sky is the only limit for practitioners of this art. Quilled earrings are handmade products. It is a form of jewellery that is made out of paper. Thin strips of paper are joined together and given shapes of beautiful art forms that are finally coated with a water resistant sealant. This makes all our designs sturdy and waterproof,” she added.

She further stated that when one wears a piece of handmade jewellery, he/she can adorn and admire a work of art that is painstakingly put together by an artist. All such designs are waterproof, sturdy, long lasting, light weight and colourful.

Ranjan Sahoo, a college dropout who teaches the art of paper quilling said, “Initially I went through depression after dropping out of college. However, after learning the art of paper quilling on my own, I came out of that phase of my life. Today, I earn quite a good package. My work involves making floral designs and customised birthday cards. However, I wish to do something to elevate the value of paper quilling as an art form.”

Sanjukta Ghadei, a quilling artist and homemaker, emphasised the importance of creativity in this form of art. She said, “My works always produce distinguished impressions. The variety depends on paper and amount of marker ink. Thickness and strength are key factors while choosing the material.”

Her approach towards the craft involves an earnest desire to overwhelm her clients as well as her critics with delicate and elaborate works of art. Her meticulous approach to create these art forms helped her win plaudits from far and wide.Paper quilling seems to have an edge over traditional art forms as it has an international flair attached to it. If one’s a beginner in practising this, he/she may find multiple books, methods and courses online. Nevertheless, it is one’s creativity which makes this work of art alluring.
