Penning Poetry with a difference

BHUBANESWAR: ‘Bhubaneswar ’, a group of students in the city with expertise in writing customized poems, has now struck upon a new idea to improve writing skill — from shopping mall to park and even in the street — young poets busy writing poems for the people while other members hold posters with customized poems for advertisement.

The group, started last year, was inspired by different literary events in metro cities. Around a dozen members from different schools and colleges are the members of Bhubaneswar Busking (BB). The group mainly operates through social media.

Orissa POST interacted with the members of Bhubaneswar Busking and this is what they had to say:

Sarbanga Mishra said, “BB has been a concept which most people in Odisha were oblivious to. I was not only exuberant but also really eager to meet new people and listen to their stories. For me, Busking hasn’t merely been an opportunity to propagate poetry as an art rather it has also been an opportunity to come across sundry stories and meet souls which resonate with my own. The most gratifying memory of Busking is of me writing a poem on Melody i.e. “The Melody of Life” for a 60-year ‘young’ couple who were from Mumbai. They had devoted their life to music and had done thousands of concerts and live shows across the nation. They said that getting a customized poem which was so relevant to their life was very touching.”

Anushka Nayak, a student of Loyola School, said, “To write for strangers, to know them more, to improve myself, it all comes together in Busking. It means a lot when people appreciate your work and like it.

Amlan Bibhudatta, a student of Ashoka University, said, “Our main goal is to promote art, take it to the masses, and make people aware of the existence and purpose of poetry. Bhubaneswar has a huge artistic potential. Bhubaneswar Busking was an idea which was inspired by various literary events in metro cities.”
