Cuttack: Rampant fraud in the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) was exposed here Saturday after gross irregularities were detected in the disposal of pension by the civic body.
After the fake employment case in the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC), the issue now is the misappropriation of funds by disbursing pension money to ghost beneficiaries. As a case in point, pension fund is being withdrawn in the name of Nabaghana Mohanrana of Ward No. 30 who had passed away in November 15, 2015.
Allegations are mounting on the corporation that pension funds are being swindled in the name of dead persons right under the nose of the civic body, with the administration caring little to check the financial drain.
When asked a corporator, Nirod Chandra Panda, said, “Allegations of irregularities in the CMC should be handed over to the Crime Branch for an impartial probe which could unearth a huge scam.”
Social activist Manas Ranjan Parida said that the people involved in withdrawing funds in the name of dead people must get exemplary punishment.
However, the CMC has been showing apathy in demanding a CBI probe into the matter that clearly indicates the intention of the corporation in hiding the truth, a source alleged.
Besides it is also being said that some higher-ups in the administration may be shielding the culprits.
When asked about this CMC Commissioner Bikash Ranjan Mohapatra said: “Based on preliminary investigations, a junior assistant of the corporation has been suspended. Further investigations are on and the people involved in illegally withdrawing and clearing the pension will be punished.”
