Dr Akshay Kumar Rout is the first plastic surgeon of Odisha who popularised plastic surgery not only in Bhubaneswar but the entire state. A leading consultant plastic and cosmetic surgeon, Rout shares his experiences with Orissa POST.

Why did plastic surgery gain such popularity in the state?

The advent of social media, craze to look good in selfies and celebrity trends have increased the popularity of plastic surgery. However, one must know that there is no magic wand. It is simply a surgical procedure to enhance certain features. No plastic is used but a mould is given to enhance one’s look. It can be said that plastic surgery is a branch of reconstructive surgery. There are three kinds of plastic surgery—reconstructive surgery, cosmetic surgery and cosmetology. Reconstructive surgery is needed to fix a damaged finger whereas cosmetic surgery is all about enhancing ones features like rhinoplasty, breast and lip augmentation, tummy tucks and liposuction.

Can Liposuction be used to fight obesity?

Only 10 per cent of body fat can be removed through liposuction. However, it is not a proper method to fight obesity. Proper diet and regular exercise can help fight against obesity. Liposuction should not be mistaken as treatment for obesity. The procedure does not remove cellulite, dimples, or stretch marks. It suits those who wish to change and enhance the contour of their body.

With whom is the procedure more popular—urban population or rural?

Interestingly, more than the urban population, rural people are more interested in plastic surgery and cosmetology. In fact, they listen to the surgeon more and follow the procedures religiously.

Why does the procedure backfire?

A lot depends on the tenacity of the patient. The youngsters tend to start a procedure and then change doctors. They also have less patience and they want a cheap procedure with immediate results and few after care. This is a major reason for unsuccessful plastic surgeries. Any patient, who does not pay heed to the doctor’s advice and precautions, sadly has to face the after-effects.

How costly is plastic surgery in Odisha as compared to the rest of India?

Well, that depends on what kind of surgery is required and for whom. However, the basic surgery can cost around Rs 50,000. It might cost anywhere between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 2 lakh in metro cities of India.

Dr Rout can be contacted at Kalinga BR Life Super Speciality Hospital, Bhubaneswar.
