Patnagarh: Parcel bomb blast mastermind and accused Punjilal Meher, along with six other prison inmates, was caught while attempting to escape from the Patnagarh sub-jail here Thursday morning.
According to jail authorities, the six accused and Meher came out of their cells and reached the main gate at about 7am in the morning.
Seeing the inmates at the main gate, the warden sounded the alarm after which police personnel rushed to the spot and overpowered the culprits.
The security staff and prisoners were engaged in a scuffle before being overpowered and led back to their cells. The jail authorities immediately asked for reinforcements to prevent the recurrence of such events in the future.
When contacted, Patnagarh sub-jail jailor Pradeep Kumar Mahalik said, “Like every morning, the inmates had queued up for nature’s call Thursday morning. However, Meher and six others managed to walk up to the main gate, avoiding the watchful eyes of security staff. They were certainly trying to break out.”
