Bhubaneswar: A pall of gloom prevailed in Odia music industry circles as Prabhudatta Pradhan, well-known music composer of Sambalpuri folk number Rangabati died at his Sambalpur residence in the wee hours of Monday. He was 75.
Pradhan started learning music when he was only three-year-old. After matriculation, he went to Banaras to learn tabla. He had joined the All India Radio, Sambalpur, as an instrumentalist in 1969.
Prabhudatta had composed music for Mitrabhanu Gauntia’s Sambalpuri lyric which was sung by Jitendra Haripal and Krishna Patel.
The song was also played in the tableau of Odisha as part of the 2007 Republic Day celebration in New Delhi. Haripal was felicitated by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik later that year.
Saddened by the death of the music composer, Patnaik expressed condolences with the bereaved family.
Director Nilamadhab Panda who had adapted Rangabati song in his film Kaun Kitne Pani main said Prabhudutta Pradhan will always be in our hearts and minds through his evergreen song.
Haripal said his friend Pradhan will be remembered forever for this number and it is a great loss for the music industry to lose a legend of such high stature.

Rangabati song was in the midst of many controversies time and again which hogged headlines.

@ The song created a controversy after composer Ram Sampath remixed the song rendered by Sona Mohapatra and Rituraj Mohanty for MTV India’s Coke Studio Season @ Protests in Western Odisha and on social media were reported after the telecast of Rangabati remix on TV alleging copyright violation.
@ Noted singer-composer Shankar Mahadevan has also enthralled the audience by singing ‘Rangabati’ at the inaugural of the 22nd Asian Athletics Championship in Bhubaneswar.
