Nayagarh: Unable to bear the shame, a rape victim ended her life by consuming poison in Naugaon block Monday. Another suicide by the victim of Kunduli gangrape done by four security personnel in Koraput district had already caused serious concern and spread scare among the people of the region.
Police said the minor girl was pregnant after being raped by a youth of the same village. Her family members came to know about this after she fainted before her mother. They lodged a police complaint.
“She was unable to bear with the public stigma. She was under stress due to a sense of shame, disgrace and embarrassment. Hence, she took the extreme step,” said the victim’s brother, adding that this happened at home when he was away at work.
When the brother returned home, he found her lying dead with a bottle of poison beside her body. A day later, the deceased girl’s mother lodged a complaint. Police immediately arrested the accused. He is now in jail.
