Bhubaneswar: In one of the rare cases of cardiac tumours, a patient from Sundargarh was successfully operated upon by a team of doctors at a private hospital here.
The patient, Junas Topno ,47, a farmer, was able to get operated with the assistance of the state government’s Odisha Special Relief Fund.
The diagnosis revealed the presence of a large tumour in the lower heart surface of the cardiac valve protruding into another cavity of the heart and obstructing the outflow of the blood. According to the doctors, tumours in heart are fairly rare and have a chance of developing in about 0.17 per cent to 0.19 per cent cases.
After his marathon surgery to survival, Topno said, “There was a point when I felt that I have lost the life’s battle. I was unable to afford the cost of the surgery initially and was hoping that I would not require it although I was advised by the doctors,”
Dr Chandrabhanu Parija, a cardio thoracic surgeon who spearheaded the surgery, said that an emergency surgery was done to remove the large tumour from the pumping chamber of the heart in view of his deteriorating clinical condition. Topno is now recovering from the surgery.
In another case, a massive 500 gram of enlarged prostate was treated upon to relive a 70-year-old man who was complaining of a bulky pelvic region and urine ailments. The doctor, urologist Dr Biswajit Nanda who treated the disease said “It is often rare.”
He said, “The normal size of the prostate gland is about 20 gram. In this case, we found the weight of the gland to be more than 500 gram which is very rare and dangerous.” said Nanda.
