Cuttack: Although the government is modernising police stations across the state, the Badambadi police station has virtually turned into a dump yard of old vehicles and stolen goods, creating traffic congestion.
Taking serious note of the issue, Home department special secretary Lalit Das Tuesday directed the DGP and the police commissioner to remove all seized articles and vehicles from the police station’s premises. The directive is applicable to other police stations too, sources said.
The DGP and the police commissioner were asked by the special secretary to shift the seized items as per Sections 61, 62, 63 and 64 of the Orissa Urban Police Act.
The Home department has plans to modernise all police stations across the state. The Orissa State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC) has provided land for this.
However, cleaning up the police station’s premises remains a far cry as there is no place at the Badambadi police station to keep the seized items. So, the authorities have no other option but to dump seized items near the busy road at Badambadi.
As of now seized items are dumped near the pre-paid autorickshaw ticket counter in front of the police station, worsening traffic congestion in the area.
Maitri Sansad president advocate Ajay Mohanty had written to the DGP and the twin city police commissioner to address this issue. With no action coming Sansad members met the Home secretary October 16 and demanded an immediate solution to the issue.
Badambadi IIC Biranchi Narayan Pati said, “The problem has worsened due to the absence of a store at the police station. The government has decided to convert the Badambadi police station into a model one and the OSRTC has provided 6,000 sq.ft land for that. The government has also sanctioned Rs 1.35 crore for modernisation of the police station,” Pati said, adding the problem would be solved once the work is over.
“We are taking steps to remove the seized items,” Pati added.
