Kendrapada: Students of Kulasahi residential school in Odisha’s Kendrapada district were stranded Sunday as floodwaters of Brahmani River overflowed its banks and surrounded the school.
According to reports, rescue operations have been initiated to reach the school and evacuate the stranded students.
The situation has raised concerns over the safety of the children as floodwaters continue to spread across the area.
According to a source, the flooding has been aggravated by persistent rain in the Brahmani’s upper catchment areas, increasing the volume of water flowing downstream. Several low-lying areas are also affected by the rising river.
It can be mentioned here that the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Sunday issued a ‘red warning’ for extremely heavy rainfall in parts of Odisha as a fresh low-pressure area has formed in the Bay of Bengal. A fresh low-pressure area has formed as Odisha faces a flood situation in six districts, where around one lakh people have been evacuated to relief centres due to inundation of their villages.
