Road mishaps claim 8 lives

Bhubaneswar: In separate incidents across the state, eight persons were killed in road mishaps Tuesday.

As per a report from Baripada, four persons were killed in two mishaps in Mayurbhanj district.

Two youths died on the spot at Kainsari bridge on Badasahi-Betanati road when their bike rammed a speeding tractor in the morning. They were on way back home from Chhelia (B) village when the mishap took place. The victims were identified as Jasobant Mohant of Nahandashola and Budhiram Singh of Dumapada.

In another incident, two lorry drivers lost their lives when their vehicles collided in Godabhanga ghat on Anandapur-Thakurmunda road in the early hours. The victims were identified Rabindra Nayak (40) of Bhadrak and Ramesh Rout (35) of Rairanagpur.

The injured helpers of the trucks were admitted to SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack.

A report from Paikamal in Bagarh district said three persons including two of a family were killed while two others were injured after their vehicle fell off a bridge near Jharmunda village Monday night.

Kishore Nayak (38) of Dungurichada village along with his wife Basanti Barik (35), son Narayan Barik (17), nephew Naresh Barik (25) and sarpanch Deben Sahu (33) set off for Bhubaneswar to get passport for Narayan who was supposed to join medical studies in Russia.

After their work was over in the passport office Monday, they visited Puri and were returning home. However, their car fell off the bridge after the driver lost control on the wheels.

The incident came to fore when two bikers spotted the victims while passing through the bridge and informed fire brigade personnel.

Firefighters rescued Kishore and Narayan and admitted them to Paikamal government hospital while Naresh, Basanti and Deben had died. The bodies were seized and sent for post-mortem.

After preliminary treatment, the father and son were shifted to Burla-based VSS Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) for further treatment.

In another incident, a postmaster was killed while three others were rendered critical in a head-on collision of a motorbike with a pick-up van on National Highway-55 in Redhakhol. The deceased was identified as Munmun Pradhan (28) of Bansajal under Redhakhol block. Pradhan worked as a postmaster in Naktideula post office.

The injured Manash Pradhan (35), Sachin Suni (32) and Sadanand Padhi (300 were admitted to Redhakhol government hospital. After primary treatment, Sachin and Manash were shifted to VIMSAR.

The incident occurred while Munmun and Manash on a motorbike were going to distribute letters, it was learnt. PNN
