Kataka: Sri Ramachandra Bhanja Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) will introduce robotic surgery facilities with two robotic machines in its neurology and surgery departments, hospital authorities said.
The machines are expected to be procured in coordination with the state government and installed at SCB by January. It will be the first time the medical college introduces robotic surgical systems.
Doctors, pharmacists, nursing officers and other operating theatre staff in the neurology and surgery departments will undergo training to operate and assist with the machines. Personnel from the company supplying the equipment will provide the training before the machines are installed, hospital authorities said.
The move is part of the state government’s plan to develop SCB into an AIIMS-plus facility. The robotic surgery is expected to be available from next year. Robotic systems can be used for major and complex surgical procedures. Unlike conventional open and laparoscopic surgeries, in which surgeons work beside the patient, robotic surgery allows the surgeon to control robotic equipment from a separate room while the system operates near the patient.
The technology will also allow trained doctors from outside the state to perform complex procedures on SCB patients remotely, according to hospital authorities.
Officials said the introduction of robotic surgery will expand the hospital’s capacity to undertake complex procedures and may reduce the time required for some major operations.
