Bahanaga: Tension gripped Gopalpur Revenue Circle office in Bahanaga tehsil of Balasore district Thursday over the refund of small amounts of money to the victims of the Rose Valley chit fund scam.
Reports said some chit fund victims had come to the RI office to submit documents to prove their claims after a list of the victims was displayed at the tehsil office.
Many small investors (Rs 10,000) had deposited their documents at the office of the Chit Fund Commission in Cuttack two years ago. The government had announced that it would refund the money to the depositors.
Accordingly, funds were sent to the RI office. But chit fund victims alleged that only small amounts like Rs 200, Rs 120 and Rs 90 came to the RI office.
The paying of this kind of negligible amounts enraged the victims and they created a ruckus at the RI office.
Saraswati Majhi of Abhana said that she had deposited Rs 8,330 in Rose Valley, but only Rs 170 was given to her and that the RI concerned had written rejected on the bond. If the bond is rejected after the first instalment, then the balance amount will not be given, she said.
Jogesh Majhi of Bishnupur who got Rs 90 said the government was trying to deceive them.
Dipendu Mohapatra of Panapana had deposited Rs 7,000 in Rose Valley, but he got only Rs 250. He said the government has been duping chit fund victims.
Similarly, the government gave Rs 170 to Prashant Barik of Kalyani for his deposit of Rs 6,290. “I deposited all my documents at the office of the commission in Cuttack. Now the government has handed out lollipops,” he fumed.
Chit fund victims expressed their displeasure at the refund of negligible amounts. They pointed out that the government is distributing money under the KALIA scheme instead of paying the money owed to chit fund victims.
Bahanaga’s additional tehsildar Sangram Keshari Parida said some people have got small amounts while others have got appropriate amounts.
