RSP tunnel mishap: Last of the five bodies taken out from tunnel

Five bodies retrieved from RSP tunnel

Rourkela: After an eight-day long operation, a joint team of the local police, the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) and fire service officials recovered the last body trapped inside the tunnel of the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) Saturday night. With this, the bodies of all the five victims have been retrieved.

One body was recovered from the tunnel Saturday afternoon.

June 3, five youths, identified as Raju Nayak, Suresh Singh, Suraj Kurmi, Gahanu Lohar and Krishna Badhaik — they aged between 25 and 30, and hailing from Sitalapada slum — had gone missing in the tunnel (Outfall-9). They were allegedly trying to steal scarp material from the plant.

The search started after the family of one of the youths lodged a complaint with the Uditnagar police station June 8. The next day itself, the first body was recovered from inside the tunnel after an eight-hour search.
