New Delhi: No detailed discussion on the issue of inter-state river water controversy over Mahanadi could be taken up at the Supreme Court Monday as the Union government again resorted to seeking more time to respond on the
matter.
The case came up for hearing Monday under the two-judge bench of the apex court comprising Justice SA Bobde and L Nageswara Rao, where, as per the original suit filed by the Orissa government, demands were made for the constitution of an Inter-State River Water Dispute Tribunal to resolve the matter.
However, the Union government which is a party in the case, in a span of mere 38 days has sought time from the apex court for the second time which led the Supreme Court deciding to hear the case October 9 this year.
Earlier, the apex court heard the case July 25, but it deferred the case for August 2 as the Union government represented by Additional Solicitor General had sought more time from the court to respond in the court on the matter.
During the short hearing in the Court No-9 of the apex court Monday here, the representatives from the Union government urged the court to give them more time to respond on the matter of constituting a tribunal for the Mahanadi river. They asked the court to give them four weeks’ time to draft their response.
