Cuttack: The police and other investigating agencies, including the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Crime Branch (CB), have apparently failed to solve several sensitive cases of crimes against women in the state in recent years.
People involved in heinous crimes like rape and murder have managed to keep themselves away from the law due to the inefficiency and callousness of police and other investigating agencies, alleged social activists.
Some miscreants had gang-raped a minor girl near Pipli November 29, 2011. The victim died during treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack June 21, 2012. The state government had appointed Justice PK Mohanty Commission to probe the crime. The judicial panel had submitted its report to the state government March 30, 2016. However, no step has been taken to bring the culprits to justice, sources said.
Madhabilata Pradhan, an AYUSH doctor of Brahmagir died under mysterious circumstances in 2012. Police are yet to solve the case. Pradhan’s family members have apparently lost their faith in the security establishments and government.
Some people tried to kill school teacher Itishree Pradhan by setting her on fire in Rayagada district a couple of years ago. She succumbed to her burns. The CBI was assigned to investigate the sensitive case and arrest the accused. However, the central agency could not make any headway in the case. The mystery behind the incident has remained unsolved.
Recently, four persons gang-raped a minor girl near Kunduli in Koraput district. The CB has initiated a probe into the sexual assault case. However, a few senior police officials have already rejected the gang-rape allegation. “Police and agencies like CBI and CB have failed to solve these sensitive cases. Now, they are rejecting the Kunduli gang-rape allegation to hide their inefficiency,” said social activist Nishikanta Mishra.
Social activist Sasmita Das is of the opinion that people have lost their faith in agencies like CBI and CB. “It is unbelievable that the CBI has failed to solve the Itishree Pradhan immolation case and arrest the accused,” Das said.
Director General of Police RP Sharma said they are giving importance to incidents of crimes against women. “There is no conspiracy to cover up any such cases,” he asserted.
Former DGP SN Tiwari advised investigating officers to collect adequate acceptable evidence against the accused in sensitive cases. “Proper investigation and credible evidence can help the judiciary to punish the wrongdoers,” Tiwari said.
