Berhampur: In the run-up to the 151st Local Self Government Day celebration in Berhampur August 31, the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BMC) is braced up in full swing preparations for the grand celebration.
The Silk city has historic significance for several reasons, including its contribution to the Independence movement. The BMC is all set to make the celebration a grand one.
Under the guidance of BMC Mayor K Madhabi, a special council meeting was held at the BMC office in this regard Monday. The message of this year’s celebration was to make the city open defecation free and waste free.
As per reports, the celebration will be graced by Bollywood actress Zareen Khan and noted playback singer Vinod Rathore. Khan is slated to spread awareness of waste management and open defecation in the city.
Similarly, some SHG groups will take a huge rally from Town Hall to the function venue at Khallikote College field, spreading awareness. Later, Vinod Rathore will grace the function in the evening, said BMC Commissioner Chakraborty Singh.
Meanwhile, around 40 projects will be inaugurated in the city as part of the celebration. Among them are 20 children parks, toilets, gymnasiums, community centres, renovated ponds, three water ATMs, traffic light system and Wi-Fi connection in the city.
Moreover, the foundation stone will be laid for the renovation of Ramlingam Pond. Similarly, a road construction project in the city under ODRP (Odisha Disaster Recovery Project) will be taken at a whopping cost of Rs 48 crore.
Meanwhile, the BMC planned various competitions including a football match. Keeping in mind possible agitation and trouble, security has been beefed up.
