SJTA chief oversees chariot making

Puri: Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) chief administrator Pradeep Jena Thursday visited the Rath Yard on the Grand Road here and took stock of the chariot construction for the upcoming car festival.

Sources said Jena examined several chariot wheels and held discussions with carpenters engaged in chariot construction. “The SJTA chief administrator collected details on the quality and types of wood used for the construction of chariot wheels,” said a carpenter.

Meanwhile, the carpenters have arranged mats made of coconut leaves to protect the chariot wheels from the scorching sun.

“There is possibility of wheels developing cracks after coming in contact with sunrays. We have covered the wheels with mats to protect them from sun,” said Bijay Kumar Mahapatra, the chief carpenter of Nandighosa chariot.

On the other hand, the temple blacksmith servitors have expedited their work to make iron pins and rims for the three chariots.
