Bhubaneswar: Recently, the Bombay High Court ruled that elderly parents can take back a share in their property earlier gifted to their son if he fails to look after them or ill treats them owing under provisions in the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007. Orissa POST interacted with some residents of the capital city to get their views on the apex court ruling.
Sakyasingh Mahapatra (Entrepreneur): I read about the Supreme Court ruling two days back. What a relief for those who have been suffering in silence. There are several instances where elderly parents who offered their life and wealth to their children are being harassed, ill treated and violated by the latter. I just hope that the verdict is implemented in all such cases and does not remain only on paper.
Susmita Das (Professional singer): In our Vedas and Purans parents are considered as chalanti pratima (living images) of God. However, in reality the scenario has changed and these days such harassment and ill-treatment of elders are quite common. Thank God, finally something concrete has happened. Let’s hope such rules are effectively implemented in our state too.
Susmita Sush (Student): It’s great news. Now there is something on which parents can really fall back on. These days many people are abandoning their parents in their quest for careers and life. On the other hand, parents who are living with their sons are being ill treated. Now, parents have the upper hand and can reclaim their property from their sons if the latter does not look after them. I would say India is definitely progressing.
Deepak Panda (Lawyer): First of all the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act 2007 makes it a legal obligation for every children to take care of their parents. This law is going to be stronger in the coming days as Government of India is planning to take a firm decision on it. Those who are not doing their duties towards their parents need to count their days.
Seema Rekha Panda (Police Inspector): It’s sad when old helpless parents come to me to file FIRs against their children ill treating them. Such laws should come into force to ensure that parents get some relief. It’s time for children to acknowledge the contribution of their parents and fulfill their needs in old age.
