Puri, April 2: IM Swayams Mishra and FM Rakesh Kumar Jena registered victories in their respective first round matches of the IInd Triple C All India Fide Rating Open Chess Championships here Saturday.
Swayams outwitted state mate Anisha Mishra, while Rakesh prevailed over another state player Satyabrata Kar. However Prasanna Kumar Nayak, Saj Santosh Panda, Gopal Chandra Mohapatra, Subhendu Kumar Patra and Dikshant Dash suffered losses. Prasanna was defeated by Himanshu Sharma of Haryana, while Raj was outplayed by Dinesh Kumar Sharma of Uttar Pradesh. Gopal was outwitted by Abhisek Das of Jharkhand and Subhendu surrendered before Ayonika Ghosh of West Bengal. In another tie Dikshant was checkmated by Anup Deshmukh of LIC.
Bhakti, Avilash triumph
Avilash Mishra and Bhakti Shah emerged champions in the U-14 boys’ and the girls’ categories of the AITA-OTA Championships Series tennis tournament at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, Saturday.
In the boys’ final, Avilash got the better of Aditya Satpathy 7-5, 6-1 to take top honours. In the girls’ segment, Bhakti prevailed over Ameek Kiran Batth 6-0, 3-6, 6-0 to clinch the title.
Football tourney
The sports hostels of Sundargarh and Sambalpur scripted emphatic wins over their respective opponents in the U-15 and U-18 categories of the Inter-Sports Hostel football tournament at Cuttack, Saturday.
In the U-15 group games, Sundargarh defeated Phulbani 3-2 and Nayagarh 4-0. Meanwhile, Baleswar eked out easy wins over Nayagarh (2-1) and Bolangir (2-0).
In an U-18 segment tie, Sambalpur triumphed over Combine-A 4-0 and pipped Kalahandi 1-0. Kalahandi defeated Baripada 1-0.
