Angul: There was sensation as a hospital sweeper stole a newborn baby from near the quarters of a doctor at the district hospital premises here Tuesday. A search was on while the sweeper and the baby remained untraced. The couple also accused the gynaecologist of his involvement in the crime.
According to sources, Prabhasini Behera, wife of Dilip Behera of Bada Hinsara under Jorpada police limits in this district had gone to meet the hospital gynaecologist as she was 10 months pregnant. As the doctor was not available in the hospital, Prabhasini went and met her in the quarters.
No sooner did she leave the doctor’s quarters after an injection, her labour pain increased. She lied down under a neem tree just next to the doctor’s residence and delivered a baby
A sweeper cleaning the area at that time spotted Prabhasini and stood by. Prabhasini was so weak after the delivery that she fell unconscious.
Taking advantage, the sweeper took the baby and fled the scene. Prabhasini regained her consciousness a while later, only to find her newborn child missing. She then tried to search for the sweeper, but in vain.
Later, she and husband lodged a complaint with the local police. Based on this, the police registered a case and started a probe.
