Puppet show pulls the right strings, stirs emotions

Bhubaneswar: A puppet show Taming of the wild was staged by Dolls Theatre, a group from Kolkata, at Munsi hall in the city Wednesday. Students and faculty of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan as well as volunteers from IIIT and KIIT participated in the show. The group will stage its last puppet show in city Friday.

The aforementioned puppet show in Bhubaneswar is hosted by Spic Macay Odisha in association with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. Spic Macay, a voluntary non-profit movement was founded in 1977 with a goal to make the Indian youth aware of their rich cultural heritage.

“In a first of its kind, Spic Macay Odisha has conducted an all night classical programme for the last three years. It is scheduled for October 27 this year” said Babita Mishra, coordinator SPIC MACAY Odisha.

Taming of the wild is one of the most famous plays in the history of puppetry. It has been performed by the group for more than 1,500 times at notable venues like the India heritage centre. The play has a huge audience at abroad too. There is no introductory voiceover as dialogues are never used in the play. Classical music is the main source of communication. Formed in 1990 by Sudip Gupta, Dolls Theatre has propelled itself to the echelons of puppetry. Gupta got the inspiration for creating such a group at a workshop with Padmashree Suresh Dutta, who is regarded as a pioneer in modern puppetry.
