Binjharpur, Dec 4: Tension gripped Binjharpur High School after an 11-year girl student of the nearby ME school was allegedly beaten up by a high school teacher without any reason Friday, a report said Monday.
The victims include over 10 students of the ME school including a girl Amrin Jahan, (11), a student of Class VI. They were roaming outside during the farewell function of teacher Afsar Ali who was retiring.
A high school teacher saw them and beat them up black and blue. He even ran after them and assaulted up.
The function was initially planned on high school premises. It was later shifted to the nearby primary school with permission from the block education officer after high school authorities opposed the ceremony on their premises. The students came back home and informed their parents.
The assault on the students by the teacher sparked tension among guardians but they kept quiet as Saturday and Sunday were holidays.
The issue cropped up again as the schools reopened Monday. Over 200 guardians marched to the school and locked the high school gate.
They staged a sit-in outside demanding action against the teacher responsible for the assault on the minor girl and other students. On being informed, IIC Asit Ranjan Mohanty and block education officer (BEO) Prafulla Nayak rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the guardians.
They alleged that the students were forced to clean the toilets of the headmaster of the school which is mired in irregularities. Police detained the teacher after a guardian filed a complaint but released him after two hours. Tension was palpable in the area despite the guardians withdrawing their protest.
They withdrew their agitation and unlocked the gate after the BEO Nayak assured to apprise the district education officer of their complaint.
