Gop: The Water Resources department has asked Gop tehsildar to take action against people who set up illegal prawn gherries (enclosures) on Kushabhdra riverbank near Putupada village.
According to sources, Water Resources department assistant executive engineer Narayan Chandra Nayak wrote to Gop tehsildar Durgacharan Murmu asking him to look into the illegal prawn enclosure issue.
At least 15 people have set up prawn enclosures illegally on a vast stretch of Kushabhadra riverbank near Putupada.
The villagers had raised the issue with the Water Resources and Revenue departments and urged them to raze the illegal prawn gherries. The villagers claimed that illegal prawn enclosures on Kushabhadra riverbank will obstruct floodwater release in the rainy season.
A few social outfits have also lodged a complaint regarding the prawn gherries with district collector Aravind Agrawal and sought his intervention into the issue.”We have asked Gop tehsildar to take action against all illegal prawn enclosures on Kushabhadra riverbank after extensive field visits in the locality,” Nayak said.
When contacted, Murmu said they have asked Nagpur revenue inspector to submit a report regarding the illegal prawn enclosures. “We will take action against the errant people after receiving the probe report,” he added.
