Bhubaneswar: Three months after arresting Subhash Ramchandran in connection with the Puri serial train arson case, Government Railway Police (GRP) is all set to drop terror charges against him.
“Nothing has emerged in the investigation to suggest that Subhash has links with any terrorist organisation,” said GRP SP Sanjay Kaushal Tuesday. He, however, said there is incriminating evidence that the Tamil Nadu resident burnt five empty coaches in three trains at Puri station November 12, 2015 and that he did so at his own will, and not on anyone’s instructions.
Apart from GRP of the state, Subhash was interrogated in custody by Intelligence Bureau, National Investigation Agency (NIA), and GRP of neighbouring states such as West Bengal and UP in connection with incidents of arson at some stations.
Subhash was also subjected to a polygraph test December 7 last. Reports in a section of the media had cited unnamed sources saying Subhash had links with a Pakistan-based outfit and had also met two agents in Mumbai. It was also said that Subhash worked at a hotel in Mumbai and came in contact with a person named Riaz, who gave him explosives to burn the trains in Puri.
The case was later handed over to NIA, which will be filing a chargesheet before the SDJM court here soon. Sources said NIA is most likely to drop charges of terror against Subhash.
Subhash was booked under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), which allows investigating agencies up to 180 days to file chargesheet. Kaushal said GRP will file its own chargesheet in the case separately. GRP has assisted NIA in investigation of the case at every stage.
