Rayagada,Dec 29: Police Sunday arrested three persons, who pretended to be Maoists in a bid to extort money from a businessman.
The accused were identified as Sanjeet Bacheli and Pabitra Bacheli of Mahadevkakeli village and Kishore Kandagari of Anandapur village under the block, said Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Y Jagannath Rao while addressing a press meet at his office here.
According to the police, Kishore used to supply biscuits to various shops in the locality. He used to buy biscuits from Chitrasen Sahu, a wholesale dealer of a prominent biscuit manufacturing
company.
Kishore planned to extort money from Chitrasen and involved Sanjeet and Pabitra to execute his plan. As per the plan, they called Chitrasen over phone and identifying themselves as Maoists asked him to give `1.15 lakh. After a series of negotiation, they brought the amount down to `40,000.
Later, Chitrasen lodged a complaint with the police, who started an investigation into the matter. As per a plan prepared by the police to nab the culprits, a place near Pitamahal along Rayagada-Andhra Pradesh road was identified as the spot where the money was to be paid to the callers.
The callers asked Chitrasen to keep the packet containing the money in a particular place and leave.
Accordingly, Chitrasen kept the packet in that place and left. Sheshakhal police led by SDPO Rao reached the spot and arrested Sanjeet and Pabitra while they were collecting the money from the designated place. During interrogation, Sanjeet and Pabitra admitted to their crime and confessed that Kishore was the mastermind behind the extortion plan. On the basis of the information provided by them, police arrested Kishore and produced the accused in court.
