Three ex-employees convicted of bribery

Bhubaneswar: Three former employees were convicted Saturday by Special Judge, Vigilance, Dhenkanal, for demanding and accepting a bribe from a contractor for the release of the final bill in connection with the execution of a cement concrete road.

The three employees included former Junior Engineer (JE), Nilamani Nayak, who is currently working as Assistant Engineer (AE) in the office of the Executive Engineer, Quality Control Division, Rengali Right Canal Project, Mahisapat, Dhenkanal, Bharat Chandra Prusty, ex-head clerk (retired) and Banshidhar Pradhan, ex-cashier (retired) of Bhuban block.

They were charged by Vigilance for demanding and accepting a bribe from a contractor for the release of the final bill in connection with the execution of a cement concrete road.

Vigilance sources here said the court sentenced former JE Nilamani Nayak, former head clerk (retired), and Bharat Chandra Prusty to undergo rigorous imprisonment (RI) for a period of two years and a fine of Rs 20,000 each.

The court ruled that in default of payment of the fine, they have to undergo further RI for a period of 6 months each for the offense U/s 7 PC Act, 1988.

The court further sentenced them to undergo RI for a period of 2 years and a fine of Rs 20,000 and in default of payment of fine, to undergo further RI for a period of 6 months more for the offence u/s 13(2) r/w 13(1)(d) of PC Act, 1988.

They were further sentenced to undergo RI for a period of 6 months each for the offence u/s 120-B IPC. All the sentences are to run concurrently.

The court also convicted another accused, Banshidhar Pradhan, ex-cashier (retired) and sentenced him to undergo RI for a period of 1 year and a fine of Rs 5,000.

In default of payment of the fine, the convict would undergo further RI for a period of two months more for the offence u/s 7 PC Act, 1988.

The court further sentenced him to undergo RI for a period of one year and fine of Rs 5,000 and in default of payment of fine, to undergo further RI for a period of two months more for the offense u/s 13(2) r/w 13(1)(d) of PC Act, 1988. Both the sentences are to run concurrently.

The Vigilance will now move the competent authority for the dismissal of Nilamani Nayak, who is currently working as an AE in the office of the Executive Engineer, Quality Control Division, Rengali Right Canal Project, Mahisapata, Dhenkanal, from service and the stoppage of the pension of Bharat Chandra Prusty, Banshidhar Pradhan, following their conviction.
