Cuttack : The government has decided to open three more cyber crime police stations in the state — one each in Sambalpur, Rourkela and Berhampur — in the backdrop of the increasing number of cyber crimes.
A cyber crime forensic branch will also be set up on the premises of the state forensic laboratory, said director general of police (DGP) KB Singh at a cyber crime investigation and forensic training workshop at crime branch headquarters here Wednesday.
“We have submitted a proposal to the state government for setting up three more cyber crime police stations in Sambalpur, Rourkela and Berhampur. The cyber crime forensic branch at the state forensic laboratory will start function in March,” Singh said.
The DGP said the state government is focusing on scientific investigation to tackle the rising number of cyber crimes. However, because of lack of trained personnel and dearth of modern equipment, it is not possible to curb the rising cases of cyber crimes, he said.
“While investigating crimes we seize computers and mail IDs. However, because of lack of high-tech laboratories and experts, we cannot reach the root of the crime,” Singh said.
Officials at police stations also do not have much expertise in tackling such crimes. To empower them with modern technological knowledge, it is necessary to hold cyber crime training programmes regularly, Singh said.
“Two officials from each police district have joined the training programme on cyber crime. The programme will train and empower them to tackle cyber crime,” said crime branch ADG Bijay Kumar Sharma.
