Bhubaneswar, June 13: Heavy thundershowers lashed the capital city Saturday afternoon, in signs that the monsoon has well and truly arrived in the state.
The rain that began at around 2:30 pm continued for a little over an hour, inundating city roads and bringing traffic to a standstill.
Met officials said the city received about 14 mm rainfall till 5:30 pm Saturday.
Hundreds of commuters, many of them students, were forced to take shelter at bus stands and underneath shop canopies after being caught unawares by the sudden downpour.
The Puri-Cuttack road was flooded, with motorcyclists wading through knee-deep water. Traffic came to a grinding halt for about half an hour in various parts of the city after some trees were uprooted due to the thundershower.
The heavy rain, low visibility and bursts of lightning kept motorists off roads for most part of the afternoon. The usually busy Janpath road wore a deserted look.
There are chances of heavy rain across the city in the next 48 hours, the Met department said.
