Bhubaneswar, April 28: Normal life in the capital city was paralysed Tuesday evening with an unexpected torrential downpour accompanied by hail and gusty winds reaching speeds up to 50 kmph.
The Met department said it recorded a rainfall of 24 mm in the city Tuesday.
The department has also issued a warning for fishermen to remain cautious while venturing into the sea as strong and gusty surface winds speeding up to 55kmph are likely to prevail along the south Orissa coast. The sea condition will remain rough to very rough in the next 24 hours, it said.
“The heavy flow of wind since morning has brought moisture in the air from the sea. The skies were also clear, proving to be favourable for the occurrence of rain towards the evening. Light rain and thundershower may occur at one or two places in northern areas whereas weather will remain normal in the rest of Orissa in the next 24 hours,” said Met director Sarat Sahu.
Titilagarh was the only place to record a temperature of 40°C while Bolangir and Bhawanipatna followed at 39°C. Chandbali, Dhenkanal, Jharsuguda and Keonjhar also received rain in the last 24 hours.
The department has predicted cloudy skies for the capital city and adjoining areas with minimal chances of rain and thundershower towards Wednesday evening. Maximum and minimum temperature may remain around 38 and 24°C over the city.
