Kendrapara: The Child Welfare Committee (CWC) of Kendrapara Friday launched a probe into a 13-year-old boy fleeing from a childcare facility Thursday as he was assaulted and forced to do sit-ups 250 times.
Official sources said the boy of Dhanadia in Rajnagar block fled from the childcare institution run by the Korua-based Pallishree Mahila Samiti as he was threatened, assaulted with sticks and was forced to do sit-ups 250 times by two fellow inmates.
He was later rescued by Town Police and handed over to the Swadhar Gruha of REISWA in Manakarpur.
The boy was later produced before the Chairperson of the CWC and was shifted to the childcare institution of Pallishree Mahila Samiti.
The boy said he was assaulted many times by the two inmates at the institution. He said the duo used to assault him after switching off the CCTV.
“I informed the CWC of Kendrapara that an inmate had fled from the childcare institution. The CWC launched an inquiry Friday,” said Minati Moharana, superintendent of Swadhar Gruha.
Smitanjali Mohapatra, in-charge chairperson of CWC, said she has started a probe, and prima facie the allegation has been found to be true.
She said the situation arose as the inmates have not been counselled properly. The institution would be asked to maintain strict vigil and ensure that CCTVs are not switched off at any time, she added.
The boy, who belonged to a dysfunctional family, had left home two months ago.
