Parajang: A village woman was trampled to death by a tusker at the Dandargadi reserve forest under the Kamakhayanagar western range of Dhenkanal forest division Monday.
She was Meena Deogama of Munda Sahi. The incident occurred while the woman was collecting firewood. The animal lifted the woman by its trunk and threw her to the ground before trampling her to death. The body broke into two pieces.
By the time the other women from her group collecting firewood in the vicinity reached the spot, the pachyderm had left the place. The women alerted the villagers and they called in the forest officials.
Officials reached the village and sent the body for post-mortem. The villagers put up some resistance initially, but officials promised necessary compensation and stronger steps to keep elephants away, before they lifted the body.
