Bhubaneswar: A 17-year-old girl hanged herself to death from the handle of a cupboard at LIG Colony late Sunday evening over harassment by family members of her lover and some miscreants. The girl has reportedly mentioned the reason for her suicide in a diary.
According to sources, the deceased identified as Devasmita was the daughter of Gopal Patra, who has been staying at House No- 8/36 in BDA LIG Colony of Chandrasekharpur area. She was a Plus II second year student at Maharishi College in Shailashree Vihar area. Davasmita and her younger brother Debashis were alone in the room Sunday evening. At 10.30 pm, she sent her brother out to have his dinner before hanging herself with a plastic rope tied to the handle of a cupboard in the room. Upon arrival, her parents called the police when they found her dead.
The girl mentioned in her diary that she was in deep love with a youth of the Shailashree Vihar area. However, some of the youth’s friends deliberately spread canards about her character. Subsequently, her lover had slowly started deserting her and later broke the relationship. Devasmita also alleged that the family members of the youth stopped him from meeting her as they considered her a characterless girl due to the rumours. She alleged in her note that she had been under severe mental pressure for the last two years due to the rumours. She named five persons in her diary holding them responsible for her suicide. She also expressed fear about threat to her family in case police took any action against the miscreants after reading the note. She requested the police to punish the youth’s family members along with his friends named in her suicide note. Meanwhile, Dipak Kumar Mishra, inspector in-charge of Chandrasekharpur police station, said, “It is too early to come to any conclusion. We are examining the things mentioned in the suicide note of the deceased and will take action soon. We have started investigation into the matter after registering a case (UD case No. 54/18).
