Khandapara: Under-trial prisoner Basant Kumar Sethy (36), lodged in the Khandapara sub-jail in Nayagarh district committed “suicide” Thursday as per the version of the jail authorities. Sethy, a resident of Dhobasahi in Khandapara, hanged himself from a tree on the jail premises, the officials claimed.
He had been accused of killing his wife for dowry. The death in custody sparked tension in the area with hundreds of residents gathering near the jail in a protest action, suspecting custodial murder.
Police sent the body for post-mortem and started an investigation.
