Sambalpur: An under-trial prisoner from a Kalahandi jail died while undergoing “treatment” at the jail here Sunday morning. The deceased was Prasanna Sahoo.
Sahoo had been lodged in the Jaipatna sub-jail in Kalahandi district from October 3, 2015 in connection with a murder case. “He was found to be mentally sick and hence shifted to the Sambalpur jail for treatment Thursday ,” jail authorities here claimed.
“His condition worsened. He started vomiting Sunday morning. We made arrangements to shift him to a hospital but he died en route,” they said.
Sahoo’s family members and relatives alleged negligence by the jail authorities in admitting the prisoner to a hospital soon. They also have doubts about the cause of the death and said they wanted to ascertain whether torture inside one or other jail led to the death.
Jail authorities insisted that they did their job. “All arrangements were made to shift Sahoo to a hospital. He was first referred to a doctor for a routine check-up. He vomited Sunday morning and died,” jail officials claimed.
